Strange Issue with Gnomad2 on Debian

I have a 30GB Nomad Zen Xtra and am running Debian 3.1 on my machine at home - I did some nosing around and determined that the recommended program to use is Gnomad2, which I have dutifully attempted to install (along with libnjb, which is required).

When I installed the packages using apt-get from the Debian repositories, it doesn't exactly work. Whenever I launch Gnomad2, I get an error message:
"Could not open jukebox:
usb_set_configuration: Invalid argument"

During all this, the jukebox doesn't react at all. However, if I go to the Jukebox library menu and choose Jukebox Information, the jukebox reacts (displays the transfer icon on the screen), but Gnomad2 just locks up and crashes; I have to use Xkill to get rid of it.

I have tried compiling both gnomad2 and libnjb from source, which doesn't work at all (gnomad just doesn't see a device), and I've tried running the application as root with the same results.

I can't find any helpful information anywhere else - hopefully somebody here can point me in the right direction

OK, perhaps a little bit of headway...
I went back and recompiled the libnjb from source and attempted to use the sample scripts... this is what happens:

Code:
$ ./handshake
Found 1 devices.
Device 1:
usb_set_configuration: Invalid argument
(Same thing happens as root.)

If I tail /var/log/messages, I see the following line at the end:

Code:
Oct  8 22:02:21 localhost kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
I'm thinking this may have suddenly become a hardware question and not a software question... sorry But I still have no idea where to go from here.
