sftp with filenames and weird characters

okay so weird characters such as space,[,],'," etc end up in filenames ever so often and I like using the command line(openssh) sftp client to go about getting things quickly done remotely or something... but everytime I end up with a file and weird characters within it, I can never get it via sftp (I have to go in other roundabout ways), I always get back a message that that files not found. Escape characters don't work (at least something like \space and \[,\]) and single/double quoting doesn't either... google search turned up nothing so anybody know how to use the sftp client that comes w/ openssh to get filenames with weird chars?
