As always...man ssh
Is the user on the client the same as the user on the server? Then
Code:
ssh hostname
Otherwise,
Code:
ssh user@hostname
You should be prompted for the user password.
Does that work?

Well, that's a surprise and a disappointment. I didn't think there were any providers like that left.

I would strongly encourage you to sign up at another provider very, very quickly and then cancel all services at the provider still locked into the 1970s. Hopefully they only have been doing hosting and your DNS registrar is some other company.

You see, how hard, or even impossible it is for a veteran like you, to get down to a newbie like me... It will take me a long time to get to that.

To you MAN, is obvious, is natural, is second nature. To me - why would I think about this word
To you SSH .... to me - what is that?

Well I tried: ssh webmaster@ourvilla.net.au - it sits there and does nothing.

Never mind

Thanks
Alex

Thnaks, not simple at all. I live in Australia, not in the USA. They are one of the larger ISP's here

Cheers

Is webmaster a valid user on that server?
I seriously doubt that your hosting provider doesn’t support ssh/sftp.
Ask them how to ssh to your VPS...

We live in a different country, different rules, in many ways different

Even if they do support ssh (whatever that does) - I am excited about the idea of the need to upload / download files from the host platform via command line interaction, I will just use FTP which I am using for many years.

Thanks anyway

Cheers
Alex
