seeking howto "config manage" web development

I'm starting a web site development project. I'm looking for advice and pointers to webliography (stuff to read) about how to accomplish
"configuration management" and "code control".

I'd also welcome advice about IDE and similar development environment. The project will use PHP, mySQL, (x)HTML, within the Drupal "framework". I expect to deploy some Perl and Python parts, too.

In the (distant) past I used CVS with C/C++ and similar projects so I remember some of the drill. I expect that "the drill" (or dance) has changed over the years.

Thanks in advance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
Greetings.
I use a combination of git, vim, gedit and the command line tools for mysql. But my programming team refuses to do anything without Eclipse and Dbvisualizer,.. and only know how to use Subversion.
Unless you enjoy CVS, I'd suggest at least looking at Subversion or Git to see which one fits your needs.
Thank you for the reply. I'm not married to anything. I've been away from the lines-per-day trench long enough, I'm starting fresh like Rip Van Winkle.
In my C/C++ days, it was
  • create some code, documentation, makefile, unit test parts, headers, etc.
  • dance with CVS to deploy check-in and check-out parts
  • repeat above for all of the parts
Check-out parts and accomplish modification.
When unit tests pass, check-in parts.
Repeat for each iteration: analysis, design, implementation, review
There are other steps that seem required in a web project because of the need to
move parts to and from the web server for testing ... and eventual release.
Surely, all of this is written in some book or article or blog or something but I cannot find it. (Gotta know enough to create a search command before you can find search results that make sense.) Any help in the form of references is golden.
Merci d'avance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
