rotating an image in GIMP

In GIMP, can I rotate an image by only a few degrees? It's a scanned image of a crooked xerox copy, and I want to straighten it. I see options only for rotating by 90 or 180 degrees.

Use the rotate tool, once you click into a layer a dialog will open for precise rotating. Be sure to set the rotating point at the right place.

That worked, thank you. What about the canvas that shows at the edges as a result of the image no longer being perfectly aligned with the canvas? I tried a few things, and the two ways I can find to hide the canvas are: (1)crop the edges, (2)Layer-->Transparency-->Remove Alpha Channel (whatever that is). Is there a better way?

If I have to deal with that I usually crop the image. Removing the alpha channel just removes the transparency, so that those free parts just become opaque, but they contain no image information.
