PulseAudio permissions issue

Hello, I just installed gnomeslackbuild. I have pulseaudio installed, but when I try to do anything I do not have permissions to open the device. In the terminal:

as paul (regular user):

bash-3.1$ pulseaudio
W: core-util.c: setpriority(): Permission denied
E: pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

as root:

bash-3.1# pulseaudio
W: main.c: This program is not intended to be run as root (unless --system is specified).
ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
W: alsa-util.c: Device (null) doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz.
ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0

When I log in from gdm with root, sound works fine. Also, the pulseaudio volume control crashes. Is there a quick fix? Thanks
