Preference of word processing

Hey all -

Recently trying to kick (at least in part) the M$ habit, could a few people provide some insight as to which word processing gui they like the best and why? For instance, I'm running Mandrake 9.1. Which is better, OpenOffice or KWrite? There are a number of files from M$ .doc that neither can open. Is it better to make the leap to LaTeX?

Regards,
Steve

About the only thing that Open Office can't open is a doc with visual basic scripts. I have noticed some oddities when a word doc has a embedded graphics. Other than that Open Office work great for me at home and work.

OpenOffice.org works fine for me when I have to open MS word files. For small notes I prefer to use plain text though.

What I dislike about word/word-format is that you never know how it will show up on someone elses computer. Plain text is not as problematic in that respect.

For serious work however I use Latex. Writing a letter to your mom in latex is overdoing it perhaps but for a report, a thesis etc. latex is the absolute best.
