Pentium 1 Linux install - total noob level

I have been given a P166 PC which has 64mb ram and a 4.2gig hard drive and as I'm normally a Windoze user I thought I'd try and install Linux on it as a "teach myself Linux" machine.

I was given a YOPER nix disc by a friend and tried to install it with no luck, as it's really for an i686 platform and so I would like to know which distro anybody would suggest I try please.

I think VectorLinux would be a good choice for that kind of machine. Last time I used it the minimum requirement was a Pentium class CPU with 32MB RAM or thereabouts.

Then Vector shouldn't be too bad a choice. It is a Slackware based distribution.

There is no 166MHz Pentium Pro. They came in 150, 180 and 200MHz variants. It's pretty much a Pentium II without the MMX instructions. Also, they were not common at all so if you have one you probably know about it.
