Mplayer video_out error no picture

I looked around the forum for a sec... It seemed as if the search is down so sorry if this is brought up alot.

I recently compiled mplayer and went to play a .mpg by

Code:
mplayer file.mpg
and it told me the file was playing and I saw the count and everything, I could pause and fast foward but there was no picute

then I tried(below) because I saw that on some howtos online.

Code:
mplayer -vo x11 file.mpg
It gave me a error initializing/opening the selected video_out and then quit out.

I tried several other option after the -vo and recieved the same error.

I am using xorg and fluxbox as my WM, no gnome or KDE. Let me know what info you need or what I should be doing.

thanks

you migth want to add your options to $HOME/.mplayer/config
If you have xv use it (as an option). I'm sure you installed the extra essential codecs from the mplayer site. Did you?

No I did not... I downloaded and compiled the player, no other codecs were downloaded I believe. I will do that.

I ran a mplayer -vo help and it gave me a few options

vesa
null
cvidix
tga
and a few others all which did not work

Ill let you know how this goes.

I have downloaded the all codec pack from mplayer, and I read the README it told me to drop them in the default codec folder. Usually /usr/local/lib/codec/

I do not have that folder, should I create it? I do have a mplayer folder in the /usr/local/lib, could that be it?

yes create it. and install the codecs there. By the way if it doesn't work you migth have to recompile. I'm sure I read somewhere that the codecs needed to be installed prior to compile. See the mplayer docs.

I have recompiled. I installed the codecs to /usr/local/lib/codecs and ran through ./configure make make install.(not like that exactly) Then I tried again throwing in ./configure --with-codecsdir=/usr/local/lib/codecs and still I have no picture and when i run mplayer -vo help I have the same options of vesa and a few others.

Any other suggestions?

If u have ATI Graphics Card, add to xorg.conf or XF86Config*:
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
and try to start mplayer -vo xv file.avi
This worked for me..

I have resolved the issue. The problem was in the x11-lib, when I configured the source to make it did not detect x11. The issue was you need the dev libaries for x11. After I picked those up off apt I recompiled it and it works like a charm.

thanks for all your responses.
