moved files to unmounted drive, cannot find now

hi:

i had a bunch of files sitting in a folder on /dev/hda1 then i did a sudo mv to /media/hdb1 which is where my /dev/hdb1 is usually mounted, but it was not mounted, the move went ahead with no errors [but there were about 2GB of files and the move took about a 2 milliseconds, it was when i realised i had a problem]. so now my files have gone into black-hole somewhere. the diskusage on /dev/hda1 has not changed, so they must be on that device somewhere.

does anyone know how i can retrieve them.

Have you tried looking in /media/hdb1 when it is unmounted? That file should be somewhere on your / filesystem when the drive is not mounted.

thanks for that, it was in /media/hdb1 on /dev/hda1 whoo-hoo that was scary.
