lrz won't send files, command line "gummed up"

I'm using minicom to dial up to a FreeBDS shell account from
a Mandrake Linux box. I cannot get the lrz to work. I think
perhaps I do not know the correct sequence to start it. In
any case, whenever I try it, I get a command line full of
nonsense on the FreeBDS side (and a dialog box saying some 3000
of some 50000 bytes were sent (but it stops there)

Th e only way to get out of the command line with the nonsense
(that's on the FreeBSD side) is to break the connection. It appears
to stay there permanently (Ctl U doesn't work, Ctrl L, Ctrl C)

The lsz (which I start from the FreeBSD prompt works fine but
only for text files. I can't download a .jpg (I can workaround this
by doing it through a regular graphical browser. Maybe I could do
that with the upload too, but not as things stand.) The .jpg download
with lsz just stops midway.
