Linux on a usb hard drive

Hi,

I have a 60gig usb2 hard rive. I would like to be able to boot a distro of linux from it. I would like it to have hardware detection so that I can use it on multiple machines.

Don't really mind which distro.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what my best option is and searching around hasn't helped me.

I have plenty of linux experience, just not in this specfic manner.

Any help much appreciated

Matt

1. does your computer's BIOS support booting from USB?

2. and i think you will have to use a distro that can be installed to a USB harddrive Damn Small Linux does on USB pendrives http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

maybe other distros do too...
