HP got in the way, won't let me boot from the usb stick with the esc key any more the only option is to hit enter and boot to windows, the arrow keys are disabled. It just refers me to www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup. That gets me exactly nowhere because everything is automated and their system won't accept the product number which is on the carton, and on the bottom of the computer.
I have done a full backup to an external hard drive, and am about to take it back to day one. It being new there is not much on it, I'll just have to reinstall all the programs.
When I get ready to install Tessa again, I will sure enough pick the do something else option and hope I've learned something. In case someone wants to say "don't do that" I'll wait about 30 minutes before starting the process. I'll be on the older computer while this one is reforming itself in case anyone has further advise. Thanks for all the help.
Personally, I make two, root and home, and i have a just cuz shared swap on a SD Card, because it is there, so I might as well use it for something.
you'll find that spiting the two may serve you in a long run. Keep them next to each other just in case you need to adjust the size, as I start out on the large size for root, until I get everything installed, then run it for a while to see what size it is going to be for the most part, then if I got a good chunk of unused space I'll merge it into the home.
point two, if in any case root gets screwed up to the point of its easier to just re-install root, you don't lose your home, just reattach it to root, via mount point, no format, same user name, you're back in, in how ever long it takes you to re-install a system.
I got 8GB ram on this lap top and swap is not used, but as stated, it is just because the 16gb SDcard is always plugged in.so i split mine for data and swap. plus these hd's are ssd.
From what I'm reading I think I need to create / (root), and /home, efi partition will be created automatically. Am I close? UEFI boot is enabled, and legacy boot is disabled on this PC, secure boot is enabled.
UEFI windows already has its /boot/efi so that part should be taken care of as it is a shared directory. Just a FYI.
keep in mind whence you get it installed you might have to finagle with the uefi grub file as change its name or move it or both before it actually work works.
Still can't boot from usb, can't do anything with esc, the boot setup was not changed at all. I've read some more and this time will take it to a clean install of windows 10, there is nothing on it that can't be replaced easily.
I'll be back when I have something to report, positive I hope, I ain't givin up.
Secure boot and fast boot disabled, made no difference, it still boots to windows when I try to boot from the linux usb stick. The boot order is usb first, dvd second, then the hard drive. I can boot from my recovery usb, but that just gets me back to the same stone wall I hit with the escape key.
Does anyone know how to get to chat with a human being at hp support? Their virtual chat does me no good because it wants a product number, and it doesn't accept the product number that is on the computer.
The almost completed install of Sylvia must have messed up the uefi boot somehow. Guess I'll
have to take it to geek squad if I can't find some way to talk with hp support. I have other things to do tomorrow, but will check in when I get a chance.
I downloaded and saved the iso on this older linux computer, so I could verify the file, Windows verification procedure just threw me every time I tried it.
I'll download and burn it on the new computer next and forget about the verification, that's usually worked for me in the past.
I'll be out of touch for a while, but will get back on it later today. I did find a number for HP support. Later.
My favorite program to put an iso onto a usb is rufus, yes it is a windows program, but it has never failed me. Rufus works for both old legacy and newer efi systems and the usb is read/writable https://rufus.ie/
