Linux installation question


I download a file for Linux installation. The file name is MandrakeLinux-8.2rc1-CD1.i586. Currecntly I use Win2000. I clicked on the file and it asked for file name extension. Can someone can explain to me how can I install Linux?

If it's an ISO image then you have to burn it to a cd. Now at least in Win98 if the name is long it may chop off part of it. Also windows by default does not let you see the file extension so to fix that

1. click my computer and get to drive and and folder where iso image is in.

2. in the top tool bar you'll see Tools click that then click Folder options A new window should pop up

3. At the top of that window click view about 7-8 line down you'll see Hide extensions of known file type click that to get the check mark off. Click apply at the bottom of window and exit.


As far as burning cd's I have no idea not rich enough to afford a burner yet.

It's an ISO image. So run your burning software, choose burning from a image (different in different programs, check for source option or similar) and don't forget to make it bootable!
