Libre Office documents not opening in Xubuntu, jibberish

Good day, my USB stored documents from XP Libre Office won't open in Libre Office running in Xubuntu. I do need them.

I tried opening with Libre Office several times, and got dashes... tried unicode 7 and 8... in Libre Office, then Abiword and even tried Open Office in WINE but it would not open at all.

What can I do with the documents on my USB stick? The pictures open, but not the documents.

I wrote and could open them in XP.

It seems to replace "a" with "$" in the titles.

If the worst comes to the worst, load them into the XP version and save the text as rich text. That will load into the Linux version and you can put the pictures back.
