In Konqueror, click on the Setting menu. When the dialogue box comes up, click on File Associations. When that brings up the file associations on the right side of the screen, select gif to see what file associations are set up be default. If there are none, you can add them under Application Preference Order (add the names of the applications which will open gif files).
