Kernel panic - not syncing error

I've had suse 9.1 for a couple of months and everythings been great. I just installed kernel 2.6.11 after reboot I get the following error:

cat: /proc/fd: no such file or directory
/init: cannot open ./dev/console: no such file
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Is there anyway around this? i've tried running a repair install but it didn't help.

oh and I had to upgrade to mkinitrd 1.2-11 cause kernel 2.6.11 requires mkinitrd 1.2 or higher and I had 1.1 before

I tried using a knoppix live cd to boot in and chroot into my install but I get this error

chroot /mnt/hda2
Bash: /dev/null: permission denied

I can edit the mkinitrd file but I am unable to save the changes. Anyone know how to chroot successfully using a live cd or how to resolve the kernel panic issue?

Ok I managed to chroot successfully using mepis live cd. Is there anyway to use apt-get to update the kernel or reinstall it from an apt repository? when I run apt I get "failed to fetch" errors, which i'm assuming is that it can't access the net. I tried mounting proc using:

mount -t proc none /mnt/hda2/proc

It mounted fine but I still can't run apt

Anything else I need to let my old install access the net?
