I spent the last 20 minutes reading why your upgrade left you with out the ability to use kdm or be able to start gui environment. the upgrade did not up grade your nvidia driver.
you need the new driver for your card. sorry I do not use yast and may be you do Know how to use it.
the grub on slack been using grub for slackware for years. It has been a part of the slackware extras for years.

it is real hard for me to even begin to know what yast does on a upgrade.

If you get the X cursor displayed, the nvidia driver
is OK. I assume, that the nvidia.repo was enabled by
the update. ( Your post says nvidia updated.)

So it is a KDE problem. If you have the install DVD,
you can ( may be ) install the previously package
versions.

Please do the command : rpm -qa --last > new-list.txt
to get you a file with the updates.

Not all updating will work. It it also a way of getting
packages tested, and not always quite stable packages.

I would only do absolutely necessary security updates !
Suse / Novell will probably prefer, to have all their
"news" tested.
.....

the update they did came with a new QT and new xorg. the symlinks are broken till you rebuild and install nvidia drivers. I just went through this. reinstall nvidia non free drivers or change your configure your /etc/xorg.conf to use the nvidiafb open source 2d driver.
This is definitely a QT problem with xorg and we know QT and kde go hand in hand.
try xdm instead of kdm and go from there choose your session type kde.
Good luck.

ok it is broken. when kde upgraded it also up grades the QT. QT is what runs kde. things I would do because the qt and kde and the xorg was upgraded
Quote:
reinstall kdm, rebuild my nvidia driver to work with new xorg,
. upgrade all the kde4 stuff. if kdm is not working try startkde if that does not work then. yast hast some serious problems. if startkde does work then reinstall kdm. Here is the real kicker SUSE is set as default to run level 5 a graphical login and if you are not using default login and YOU changed it let me know.
run level 5 is the graphical login where it starts the xorg. if you find your self with a
command line login (run level 3) your xorg is not set up correctly with your display driver. or kdm has failed. (KDE Display Manager) and this would also keep you from using Startx. you want to try xdm this is the fall back main program (Xorg Display Manager)

last but not least if KDE is Up graded QT has to be upgraded. but I am sure yast would have done that.
if you went from kde3 to kde4 that is a whole new thing.

then reinstall it because like I said before the up grades you did was kde,qt,and the xorg. there are broken sylinks. How do you fix. by reinstalling the nvidia driver. During the install it will run the scripts to work with your system. or you rebuild like this opensuse says to do so boot up your machine. login as root you must be root to run (kdm)from run level 3. if that fails. type killall kdm. then type this.
