Is there any OS flavour with Player support for .AVI/.MP4/.MPEG etc

Hi All,

I following evaluating Linux OS's

1. OpenSuse 11.2
2. Mandriva 2010
3. Kubuntu 9.10
4. ubuntu karmic koala

Which is the best according to you guys?

Main Applications
1. windows 7 comparable GUI
2. with Movie Player with .Avi / .MP4 /.MPEG /.Flv

Meanwhile what is the difference b/w Kubuntu and Ubuntu?

Thanks in Advance

I guess KDE is a comparable Desktop Environment for windows and is available for pretty much any distro. Just remember that Linux is NOT Windows and can't really be compared. Kind of like saying which orange is comparable to an apple. As far as media support, that should be available in the repositories from your distro under gstreamer, gstreamer_good_plugins, gstreamer_bad_plugins and gstreamer_ugly_plugins.

The difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu is that Ubuntu runs on the GNOME Desktop Environment by default and Kubuntu runs with the KDE desktop environment. If you are interested in having all you media work out of the box, I'd have a look at Linux Mint. I personally haven't used it, but it is supposed to have most plugins for media already installed.

They will all play those formats if you can find and install the codecs.

This usually entails adding repositories to the package managers to access non-free codecs and such.

SuperOS comes with everything setup out-of-box. Mint would be another good choice. Both are ubuntu on steroids.

I am really impressed with SuperOS. For some strange reason Mint 7 and 8 do not like the Opera browser and I experience solid lockups.
