/etc/motd isn't a program, it's just a file read and printed by login if the file exists and login's not prevented from doing so. What features do you want? What errors are you getting? Have to be more specific. I probably can't help - I zeroed motd and just tweaked /etc/issue a bit and don't mess with it otherwise but, if you spell it out more, maybe others can.
-- Oh, I see (trip to freshmeat). You want something completely different. I thought 'xmotd' might be 'eXtendedMOTD', not 'X Windows MOTD'. If it's a perl/tk app, I'm not surprised there are difficulties. Maybe a wrong version of the ever-shifting and breaking tcl/tk or missing one of the zillions of perl modules. Post up the errors and I'm sure someone can help.
