Is there a man page on how to use man page?

Hello,

I am learning Linux and I often see references to manpages. I read what I can but I really do not under stand how the pages work.

How do I bring up pages that I want rather than just getting lucky typing in names sometimes?

What do the names/number format mean (IE clear(8) manpage)? What is that 8?

Is there a main directory where I can browse the available manpages? This would be easier than having to know the name of the file.
