is self-compiled software more stable than binary .debs?

I am using Kubuntu based on Debian and I cannot find a stable, understandable video editing program. The closest to "usable" is the closed-source MainActor, but even that, and all the others, crash often.

If I stick with Free, Open Source software (which I'd prefer to do), i have a pretty wide range of options, kind of. They're all pretty unstable on my 2.5GHz, 1GB RAM AMD Athlon.

Would i get better performance from these applications if I compiled them from source? Or is the stability a code issue?

There is no such thing. If you want Debian, and it's stability, you have to use Debian.

kumbunto i think is based on umbuntooo which i think is derived from Debian - unstable

the "unstable" part being the operative word there.

bedian multi-media distribution (demudi) is merged and in sync with debian-testing
and debian-stable.

perhaps testing would be better for you.

compiling your own programs from scratch is something for advanced users but yes it is often possible to fix what is unstable by doing that.
