Installing XMMS, Problem with glib

I'm installing xmms and when I run the configure script, I get an error that says:

checking for glib-config... no
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.2... no
*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to glib-config.
configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***

I have glib 2.0 installed. How do I get xmms to notice this and run the installer?

You need glib.

It's like GTK, some apps need GTK2, others GTK 1.2.

I think I have it though. I have directories called glib 2.0 in the /usr/include and /usr/lib directories. I think I have gtk also.

Try (as root)

ldconfig -v

and look for something like libglib-1.2.so.0 and/or libglib-2.0.so.0 in the output under /usr/lib

This will show if the library actually exists on your system. If not, (re)install it. If it does, then you should be able to pass the path to glib (i.e. /usr/lib) in the configure scripts options.
