How to install grub manually ?

Hello,

I am trying to install grub as boot loader for an embedded box.
I am using the procedure as described on the gnu website:
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/man...-GRUB-natively

Unfortunally grub does not boot, but stops after displaying 'GRUB' twice.

This is what I do to install grub:

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,1)
grub> root (hd0,1)
root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup --force-lba (hd0)
setup --force-lba (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 17 sectors are
embedded.
succeeded
Running "install --force-lba /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+17 p
(hd0,1)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... d
Done.

After BIOS self check, grub does not boot -- all I see is this
GRUB GRUB

Help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Tilman

What operating system(s) are you trying to boot to?

Have you specified using the root or rootnoverify command?

4.1.1 and 4.1.2 at http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/man...-GRUB-natively

1) I am trying to boot linux from a CF flash.
2) I set the partition using the root command.

I find it interesting that I am getting the GRUB message twice. That could mean that the first stage of grub is loading the first stage of grub.

Part of the problem might be the CF flash and the emulation of the CF flash as FDD by the BIOS. Probably, the geometry at boot time is interpreted differently than at installation time...

Where is the grub config file (menu.lst AKA grub.conf)?
If it is not in (hd0,1)/boot/grub then grub will not know what to do on bootup

Menu.lst is in (hd0,1)/boot/grub. When I run setup,
all files (1st stage, 1.5th stage, 2nd stage, menu.lst ) are properly detected -- I copied a dump into my first posting. It is interesting to note however that the behavor changes when I use different flash emulations. When I use "user defined", grub tries to boot iself 8 times before it says "hard disk error". When use "lba" or "automatic", it print 2 times grubs into the serial console, and hangs...
