How to access database created with MS Access on Windows using PHP on Linux Server

I have a database say information about employees. This database is a simple mdb file created with MS-Access on Windows machine. Now I want to extract data from this database by writing PHP code on Linux machine which is a server of website. This application will be uploaded on website and if user want some information about say employee then he has to enter empno/joining date from Linux machine then it should find the database for the desired record. Can this be done. If yes then how?

best way would be to import the mdb into a mysql database, then access that way.
