RE: Windows XP Home w/SP3 dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.04
I would like to be able to run some of my applications installed in XP on Ubuntu. I know that this is a popular topic asked. So ... how do I go about setting up and using Wine to run this Wndows apps?
Please ... be gentle! I am a newbie to Ubuntu and don't have the faintest idea what I'm doing. I am wanting to get familiar with Ubuntu and it's going to take time. Please be as specific as possible.
You can't run programs installed on your Windows installation in your Ubuntu installation, but you can install these programs in Ubuntu under Wine. The Internet has many general guides for Ubuntu, including the use of Wine.
In general, after installing Wine from the Ubuntu repositories, open it and configure it to XP. Then click/right click on the setup.exe file of the program to install and specify installation with Wine.
You can practice something like this on a USB persistent live version of Ubuntu without loosing anything but your time and patience.

So then, for the sake of arguement, let's say I downloaded an app named ABCD.EXE to the download folder (Ubuntu). If I understand correctly, I can use Wine to install ABCD.exe and then, be able to run it. Now, my question becomes ... is ABCD.exe installed under Ubuntu or Windows? Dumb question I guess as it is probably obvious. I needed asked anyway. I am guessing then the only app (if I remember correctly) that can run Windows installed apps is CrossOver. Right? I am wanting to keep everything I can "free". CrossOver is a paid-for application. Anyway, thanks for the assist.

Installed into ubuntu.
Crossover stuff is just modified, proprietary versions of the stuff in WINE.
Its always better to use linux native programs if at all possible. Not much point running linux then using all the .exes you used to use with windows IMO.
