How can I stop applications monopolizing the sound card.

For example. i'm browsing the internet listening to music (normally with rythmbox) and i pause the music to watch something on youtube. i hear nothing and have close rythmbox and restart firefox before i can listen to the video. help me please.
thanks

You need to use a sound daemon like jack (or esd/artsd etc).

You may need to specify a backend driver when starting jackd, presumably alsa.

Code:
jackd -d alsa
then configure your software to use jack (assuming it supports jack of course).

Not everything will have jack support yet, so you may need to kill the server for some apps (e.g. games), but most modern audio/video software should support it.
