How can I start X remotely?

I wanted to use a couple of GTK+ apps on my machine back home. right now I'm on the move.

I just got VNC installed on this machine, but now I can't get X to start via SSH. Gives me a no screens error, which I know is wrong. I have X working just fine when I actually sit at the machine.

Oh yeah <stupid story> I tried to recompile my kernel via SSH from Europe about three weeks ago, and forgot to run lilo at the end to update the boot config. Long story short, it all worked great except that it wouldn't boot. Oops! </stupid story>

This is on slackware 9.0 with the 2.4.21 kernel.
