help with superkaramba 3.9

i downloaded the source and extracted it and navigated to the directory where i put it then i did
Quote:
./configure
and next you do
Quote:
make
and then
Quote:
make install
right? well when i do make it says

Quote:
bash: make: command not found
tell me if im doing something wrong... when i try to go root by typing

Quote:
su
it says enter password, duh, then after i enter my password it says authentication failure sorry. wtf?

im not sure if the reason make doesnt work is because im not root. do i have to put # signs in front of it? because thats what i seem to see people do. sorry im quite the nub at source compliling.

thanks in advance

You're certainly on the right track. Depending on the distro, "make" is a root only command, meaning only root can do that. When you "su", it's asking for the root password, not your user password.

yeah i type in my root password. it just says that it doesnt authorize. it really pisses me off.like that password works for sudo. is there a way to become root using sudo instead?

when you use "sudo" you're typing in your user password. "su" requires the root password. Yes, if you have it setup, you can "sudo" make. However, setting this up requires root access. You can either log in as root, or "su" to root. Either way, you need to use the root password instead of your user password.

At some point during the installation, it should have asked you to create a password for "root". Root is essentially just another user account. The difference is that root has permsissions to do anything on your system. You can always try to login in as root, from the login screen. However, you would typically login with your normal user accout, Joe for example. Then, if you need to change a config file or whatever, you'd "su", meaning you'd switch user to "root". So, as an example, Joe log's in using his password "helloworld", then he su's, so he'd have to enter root's password which is "123world". Hope that helps.

I don't think Ubuntu installs any development tools by default. You need to do
Code:
$sudo apt-get install build-esentials
