garbage characters when switched to text mode

Hello,

I recently finished installing a debian woody install. Worked fine before installing X Windows. After installing X Windows, whenever I switch to text mode, I get "garbage" characters - ie, characters get scattered all over the screen. I believe this has to do with X Windows. A year and a half ago after I installed RedHat 8.0, it had the same problem. Being it was a disc bought from RedHat I was able to get tech support and they gave me the fix, and it worked, but I can't remember what it was. I vaguely remember changing a script in one of the X Windows files, but not sure...

Has anyone run across this?
