fc2-gnome : Applications dont start / very slow to start

I have installed fc2 with gnome on my laptop. I find that many of the applications (pdf viewer, control center etc) are VERY slow to start (I mean, they start after 10 mins or so!) The system will be idle and I dont think its a memory issue either (I have 256mb). Any suggestions on what I can do to make them work faster? I am using a custom kernel (didnt change much.. except for adding wireless support). Do you think it may be causing the problem?

Thanks for any help!
