Unhappy DVD Players not working

I am using a Toshiba Tecra 8000 PII 366 with DVD drive laptop, running RH9, and up2date says all packages are up to date. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get any DVD player software to work for me. They all do the same thing - as soon as I try to play a file (on dvd), they close. No error messages, nothing.

I have tried compiling xine and mplayer myself. Nothing. Ended up trashing my audio drivers so bad I couldn't fix them. I'm using Alsa, as RH9 doesn't support my sound card. I ended up wiping the system with a fresh install, and reinstalling Alsa.

After that, I tried using APT with Synaptic. Then I used Synaptic/apt to install xine. It looked promising - I saw, for a brief moment, the FBI warning screen of the DVD I was trying to play. Then, as before, poof! Nothing. Not a pixel left of the window. No error. Nothing.

I have tried Ogle, Mplayer, and VLC, all with the same results - as soon as I hit play, POOF!

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Linux noob?

Thanks!

Rich

By the way - I did create a link to the dvd drive, and the drive is accessed prior to the programs shutting down.

The program 'totem-xine' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 66 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
