distro for a noob


What distro will make life easiest for an absolute noob ?In particular 3rd party app installation . It'll be used for general computing.

By third party application, do you mean compiling from source? You might look at that third party application and see if it official supports some distribution.

Take the two quizes in my signature to see which distro is right for you. Although I always give my shameless plug for Debian, which was a little hard to setup the first time, but generally I've thought was easy to use...

Since you weren't too specific with what you want, pretty much any of them could be what you want. Personally I'd vote for ubuntu, but what's easiest for you can be pretty personal. If you haven't already done so, look at some of the many "which distro" threads that already exist, and head over to distrowatch.com

Very helpful thanks , looks like Mandriva's the one to try first.

Iv'e tried three, and suse 10.0 has been the easiest so far on acount of yast . . . but . . my god there are so many!!!lol
