/dev/hdc randomly opens SuSE 9.1

I'm a Linux newbie, and have just switched to SuSE 9.1 after using Mandrake for a few months. The SuSE install is only three days old (plenty of time for me to screw things up.

I have two optical drives, a dvd burner (/dev/hdd) and a dvd-rom (/dev/hdc). Today the dvd-rom, a Liteon DVD LTD163, began randomly opening. I can have no programs running, walk away and when I come back the tray is open.

Any ideas where to start trouble shooting?
