default root password

I forgot to set a root password. I just booted my new system, but can't log in. The problem is I do not want to shutdown(uncleanly) with everyhing mounted. Is their someway to unmount everything, to shutdown? If I can do that I am able to chroot my system and set the password.

edit/added

I just hit cont-alt-delete , that set the init process to shutdown
