Console vs X11

I know what X11 apps are, but what are console apps.

If you go to http://www.tucows.com and search for linux apps, they are devided into X11 and console apps.

Simply, what are console apps?

Thanks,

Robert Liguori

They are applications that are run in the console, or the Command Line.

They have no actual GUI, though many use Ncurses to make "pretty" buttons instead of regular black and white text. Most are just text though.

Like when you run ./configure , make, make install, to install software, you are actually using GCC, a console app.

Many others include Links, a Text browser, mpg321 a console mp3 plater, cdrtools - console cd recording tools. There are thousands of others.

The CLI is what was before XFree86, so all apps were made in that at some point.

They are the back ends for the gui flash, so why not get directly to the proper tool rather than running through a gui?

I love the power...

I think it was Alaxander Pope that said "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, Either drink deep or taste not the wonderous spring"

You had better avoid Linux at all costs then!

I am just continually amazed at what this little box can do and jealous of all the time I wasted my computers cpu cycles by continually crashing and re-booting.
