Codecs in Totem

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 5.04. I would like to use totem as my media player, but I cant figure out how to install codecs for it. I already have mplayer installed (without a GUI) that I use with the mplayerplug-in for streaming through firefox. The mplayer codecs are stored in my /usr/local/lib/codecs/ directory.

Is there some way I can make Totem use those codecs?

Totem uses gstreamer to play things, so you will need to install gstreamer plugins/codecs for totem.

Totem uses Mplayer for a backend, Xine, gstreamer or it will run by itself.

It's been a while since I did this but
In your home directory there is a hidden dir /home/you/.gnome2/totem
Somewhere like that is where totem keeps its config files. Find that hidden folder and link or put the codecs there and totem will play anything.

Set your file directory to show hidden files and look for it. I did it on a Mandrake machine and Totem played .wmv, .rm etc fine. It was in ~/.gnome2 on the Mandy machine.

Hi Everyone! You don't need to symlink:
I have just made Totem play realaudio codec .this is the package you need for playing Totem on centos.I think the package are similar in Ubuntu.
rpm -qa|grep gstreamer
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.11-1.el5.rf
gstreamer-tools-0.10.20-3.el5
gstreamer-0.10.20-3.el5
gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.20-3.0.1.el5_3
gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.9-1.el5_3.2.

Happy playing :-)
