Change movie brightness

I have a DVD movie that is too dark. Is there a way to re-encode it to brighten it up? It's the latest Harry Potter, BTW. I've turned the brightness on my monitor up all the way, and it's still not enough.

You could try using mplayer and using the video filter eq thus:
Code:
mplayer -vf eq restOfit
Then use 3 and 4 to fiddle with the brightness, not keypad. There are other ways given in mplayer's manual.

Hmm. I was using VLC and didn't see any way to change the brightness, but I can in totem, so that'll work. Thanks. (For some reason I can't get it to run in mplayer from an iso. - No matter.)

mplayer -brightness +7 -contrast +7 -vo xv -ao alsa /disc/VIDEO_TS/*.VOB

-vf eq works too, 1,2,3,4 for contrast and brightness. I recently realized that ogle inherits whatever brightness/contrast settings you last used in mplayer. If you have an ATI graphics card, you might not need -vf eq (or was it eq2) to be able to change settings on the fly DURING playback. I've been using -vf pp=al to sort of auto balance. Not perfect, but it makes a heck of a difference on my TV capture card. Especially for particularly dark shows like SGU.
