Can't get Mame sounds out HDMI

I have my Linux machine connected to my HDTV through a HDMI cable which provides video and 7.1 surround sound. Music, movies, and Steam games all produce sound out of the HDMI connection. I cannot get Mame sounds out of the HDMI connection but it does come out of the headphone jack connection in the front of the PC. How can I get Mame to output the sounds to my HDMI connection? Audacity lists it as HDA NVidia: HDMI 0 (hw:1,3) and another program shows it as ALSA:hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=1.

When I use my HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my TV I have to tell Linux that I want to use HDMI as the audio output rather than the system speakers (headphones in your case). I'd be willing to bet that's all you have to do to fix this.
