blank screen during startup

Hi,
i transferred my hard disk and motherboard to another computer (i've been travelling) and tried to get fedora core 2 to boot up - i get all the standard text output until the point where it should start up the gui and continue checking for new hardware, etc. unfortunately the screen goes blank for about a minute, then flashes the login prompt for a second and then goes blank again. when i press the shutdown button the screen comes back to life and displays all the events as normal... how can i fix this? is there any way to get it to recognize and configure the new graphics card/monitor? would upgrading to fc3 do the trick?

Thanks,
Imran
