Cool bit torrent

Good morning to all! I already checked the above threads so if there is one and I missed it, I just missed it. What is "Bit Torrent", is it hardware or software? What does it do? Where does it go? Is it necessary? Is it for Linux only? Thankx in Advanced,Saquear!!!

Here is the very short answer.

Bit torrent is a peer to peer protocol for file distribution. Those who are downloading from a bit torrent source are also utilized in distributing that file as well. You can read more about it here. http://www.bittorrent.com/

There are bit torrent clients for most operating systems. I personally use Azureus (requires java)
