I have built a LFS system as well as a Gentoo system and every time I do apropos command to search though the man files never finds anything. Even with things that it should find things for. Im wondering if anyone has ever had this issue before. I have tried looking online for it and cant find anything on it <-- This could be due to the nature of the problem its a hard thing to search for because it pulls alot of irrelevent information.
Yea thats the weird thing the man pages work perfectly i just cant apropos anylthing cause it brings up no results. I have tried updatedb to see if that corrects the problem but it does nothing. Its not a critical thing im really just curious why it doesent work.
I think the makewhatis cron (daily) is responsible for creating the whatis/apropos database. If not enabled or installed then...
Let us know if that is right and fixes your problem.
Ok maybe thats what im not installing then. I dont have a /usr/sbin/makewhatis directory/command also command makewhatis does nothing. Ill check farther into it and get back to you guys if this improves anything. <-- Also this seams strange that this would be missing from the stage3 snapshot for gentoo :P
Hmmm intresting go figure randomly looking at the old crap ive posted here and here is a jem among them I really think this should be a step in the LFS book because apropos doesent work right off the bat with it. There is a reason for me to bring this back up. Doe's anyone know if makewhatis is part of the standard man package or is it a part of something else ?
