Alsa via82xx - master volume has no effect (dxs 1 does work)

Hi,
I've found loads of people have had 'fun'with the via 8233 chipset and via82xx driver for alsa, so I feel *almost* privileged that I can actually hear stuff. But...

I'd like to know how to get the master volume control to do anything. I can control the sound output by altering 'via dxs',1, in kmix or alsamixer but quite a few programs (eg multimedia keys on KDE 3.2) seem to only want to play with the master volume control.

Has anyone managed to get this working?
I've tried playing with ac97_quirk and dxs_support flags but with no joy.

BTW I'm using alsa 1.0.4, but otherwise stock slackware 9.1

Failing this, any ideas on how to change the config of multimedia keys to use dxs1 rather than master?

TIA

have got the same problem since i upgrade alsa drivers from 1.0.3 to 1.0.5.
can only control volume through via dxs (no number). what enoys me most is that i can not play two sound streams at the same time (say video and music). i have to stop all sound play on the one soure to be able to play anything on the other one.

went through the whole alsa documentation, couldnt fine anything.
am using gentoo btw.

Hi!

I had a similar problem one month ago and have spent a lot of time in its solution. As I stumbled upon this post, probably others will, so I'll post the link to a howto I wrote in the next post (can't post urls in the first one).

I hope this helps someone...
