Question What protocol is used to save outgoing email on a server?

I understand that messages are sent using SMPT/SMTPS. But how are these messages saved to a remote "sent messages" folder? Does that use SMPT also? or is IMAP used for this part?

EDIT:
To clarify a bit, it seems to be my mail client, Thunderbird, that is saving outgoing messages in folders.

This looks like a good intro to the topic.

Here's another that seems germane.
