sendmail configuration

hello Linux Experts,

I have Nagios configured and for it to send notification , need sendmail to be configured.

So in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf i have an entry like this:

DSexchange1.domain.com:exchange2.domail.com

This is for the purpose of redundancy i.e if exchange 1 server fails then the notification mails are still routed through exchange 2 server.

But the issue here is , lets say exchange 1 fails , now sendmail takes a lot of time to relay the mails through exchange 2 server also few mails are getting missed.

I would prefer to reduce the time span i.e make few attemps through exchange 1 and if fails immediated start relaying all the mail through exchange 2 withinn limited time

Is this feasible , and if yes then what has to be done from the linux perspective.

Thanks in Advance

Anirudh

The second one was my post, take a look at it.
The sendmail can be configured on any way you want it.

There is the sendmail doc just search for the queue and you will find many way for fine tuning to fit it for your configuration.

I guess i found the parameter

Currently its set to
O Timeout.connect=15m which is 15min i guess

If i change this to 5m that will chnge it to 5 min delay before it gets replayed through other smart host.

Is that right ?

Please help

Thanks in Adv
