nfs and rpcbind

Can anyone explain to me how nfs works with rpcbind? Why does the nfs client have to connect to portmapper port 111 in order to then use nfs port 2049?

thanks

from what ive gathered rpcbind acts to deter traffic from ports rpc services use so as to make it harder for someone to mess with the traffic.... so when you connect to 111 it redirects you to a higher port depending on services running on the server to sort of make it harder to connect to priveleged ports...
it does so by filtering ip addresses but doesnt protect against spoofing. (basically security by obsfucation)
Im still studing this myself so i could be a little off ... but I think this is the jist of it.

you may get a better answer but I hope i helped.
