my own server or vps?

Im curious im paying around £48 monthly for my virtual private server. Is it better to build my own server at home and host my website or a vps with a provider? any help? thanks.

I suppose that depends on how you define "better", and what your requirements are (specifically, how much traffic are you looking at). For me personally, it makes more sense to host it myself.

It is also worth mentioning that your ISP's TOS almost certainly prohibits running any kind of server. That doesn't mean anything will actually happen to you if you do...but if your ISP wants to make a big deal out of it, they would be in the right.

Im running a php web application with a reasonable large traffic. I have a server which I bought last week. The specs are:
2 x Intel Xeon 3.2Ghz/1MB - Hyper-Threaded

8 GB RAM

Dual/Redundant PSU

2 x HP 36GB 15K SCSI Hard Drives Installed

1U Rackmount Form Factor

Two embedded Gigabit Server Adapters

I can get that same server like 3x from the seller. Do you think that will help? thanks.
