I'm very new to using Linux and was trying to setup a modded minecraft server on ubuntu server.
I have the minecraft server running in screen so that it can run continuously. I have ssh set up so I can access the server from my desktop. The server runs perfectly right up until I close the ssh connection. Then the minecraft server is still running fine but can't contact mojang when people try to log in, so without access to their authentication servers the connections are declined.
Opening the ssh connection again, then the minecraft server can once again contact the authentication servers.
Not sure what's going on here, any help would be greatly appreciated.
At first detaching from the screen was fine. After closing the ssh session and coming back later opening the ssh didn't bring it straight back, I had to reattach to the screen before connection was restored.
I have run minetest server and not observed this behavior, but I do not run minecraft. Has it no daemon mode?
From the documentation I would presume that minecraftd should run fine and not care if you have ssh sessions open or not. If you are starting it as a user process you may need background it and detach it from your session.
The issue you're facing might be related to the SSH session closing and affecting the server's network access. You could try using a tool like tmux or nohup to keep the Minecraft server running even when you disconnect from SSH. This way, it should maintain connectivity with Mojang's servers.
Also, have you considered taking a break and trying out Cash Giraffe? It's a fantastic way to earn some extra cash by testing out new mobile games during your downtime. It's a win-win – gaming and making money!
