linux for a server. your experience.pros and cons


I am trying to define wich linux distro to use as server.
I dont know to many distros.
I actually cannot decide beetwen debian and centos.



What distro do you guys use in your servers ???? why ??? what PRO'S and CON'S did you find in your distro or another one ????

have any of you guys try FreeBSD as server ??? if yes , how was the performance ???


sorry for all this questions, I want to take an OS and became expert at it.

Well, Centos is a free version of RHEL, 7 yrs worth of updates for each major version http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/errata/.
highly stable.
Also, because RHEL is widely used in major orgs eg NYSE, any serious issues tend to be found and fixed pronto. RH actually employ a lot of the developers.
It's not perfect, nothing is, but it's definitely worth thinking about.

I don't know enough about the others to comment.

While I like debian and know it more than any I perfer to use centOS. I feel it has a lot of commands that are tailored for administrators. As mentioned it is pretty stable too.

As for freebsd I find performance to be rock solid. I have messed with a couple of freebsd servers.

However where I currently work we run AIX and Red Hat and HP-Unix and looking to convert everything to Red Hat.

My suggestion would be to learn Red Hat as it is found in more corporations than debian or freebsd.
