Jail Environment causing sql insertion errors

I have created a jail environment for some users on the system, each have mysql account and get access to it in the command line using -h switch.

Some of them have the £ sign in data they are trying to insert using the mysql command line... the £ sign basically stops any data from being inserted.. (causing a # at the start of the line then £ sign goes missing and get truncated after that)

But if i repeat exactly the same insertion sql, (with the £ in) outside the jail environment, it does not cause a problem at all.

Is there any settings that could be particular to the jail environment that could cause this to happen?
